Industrial office design is a popular interior design trend taking inspiration from factories and manufacturing environments. They often feature neutral tones and wide open spaces, and where people are looking to minimise their impact on the environment by building on brownfield sites, they can feature genuine, authentic industrial features where former factories and commercial manufacturing spaces have been repurposed.

Tannery Studios is one such environment, where a manufacturing facility has been converted to office spaces.  The site dates back to the 16th century and the reign of King Charles II where it has been in constant industrial use since then. It’s proximity to the river Wey navigation canal made it idea for transportation to places that needed raw materials required by the defence industry such as iron, timber, and charcoal for smelting, gunpowder and ship construction. During the second world war, the factory changed to support the war effort in processing natural raw materials such as gums and resins, dried foods, and botanical based materials.

When converting the factory to office space, the original features were embraced with industrial office design a key feature of the new office spaces. The conversion also made use of repurposed materials from manufacturing and construction such as scaffolding boards.

The resulting effect is both modern and unique, but makes use of existing materials and features to ensure a sustainable construction and development.

This has affected it’s more modern functionalities essential to all growing businesses, such as super-fact Wi-Fi and electric car chargers. There are also up to date methods for reducing the building’s impact on the environment such as rainwater harvesting, insulation, and energy saving features like LED lightbulbs.
